The collection of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Ghent, S.M.A.K. gives us a picture of developments in international art from 1945 to the present. S.M.A.K. owns one of the most important collections of contemporary art in Western Europe and with a collections of more than 2000 works the museum provides us with the largest overview of contemporary art in Belgium.
S.M.A.K. places the artist in the centre of its thinking and its activities. We invest in maximum quality for a broad and diverse public and wish to be regarded as a house that is open, transparent and liberal. With regard to content we present ourselves as an artistic laboratory, a place of experimentation and innovation where today you can see what could be important tomorrow. The S.M.A.K leaves questions open, encourages one to think and preserves doubt.
At the end of January 2010 the museum will be holding the first retrospective exhibition of the Belgian artist Koen van den Broek. From the spring the museum will display the wide range of its rich collection in dynamic layouts. Finally, we will round off the year with work by James Ensor (1860-1949) and contemporary art.
